The Mayor and Council of the City of Emerson, Georgia has tentatively adopted a millage rate of 3.60 mills which will require an increase in property taxes.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on this tax increase to be held at Emerson City Hall, 700 Highway 293, Emerson, Georgia on July 9, 2012 at 9:00AM.
Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at Emerson City Hall on July 9, 2012 at 6:00PM and July 23, 2012 at 7:00PM.
This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 3.6 mills, an increase of 3.6 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be 0.0 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $125,000 is approximately $180 and the proposed tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $125,000 is approximately $180.
The Mayor and Council of the City of Emerson, Georgia does hereby announce that the millage rate will be set at a meeting to be held at City Hall on July 23, 2012 at 7:00PM and pursuant to the requirements of O.C.G.A. Section 48-5-32 does hereby publish the following presentation of the current year’s tax digest and levy, along with the history of the tax digest and levy for the past five years.
The Mayor and Council of the City of Emerson Georgia today announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 100 percentage over the rollback millage rate.
Based upon operating deficits incurred in the General Fund in recent years and a projected budget deficit in the General Fund based on the Fiscal Year 2013 budget, the Mayor and Council have concluded that it would be sound financial policy for the City to consider a property tax increase to meet General Fund expenditure requirements and to maintain fund balance at current levels.
When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.
The budget tentatively adopted by the Mayor and Council of the City of Emerson Georgia requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate, therefore, before the Mayor and Council of the City of Emerson Georgia may finalize the tentative budget and set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at Emerson City Hall, 700 Highway 293, Emerson, Georgia on July 9, 2012 at 9:00AM and 6:00PM and on July 23, 2012 at 7:00PM.
